Tamri and Heath made a rather pathetic pair as they trudged across the beach and climbed the steps to the village. Tamri’s eyes throbbed from staring directly at that massive Lightning bolt, and she had to squint to find her way. By the time they reached her little house, Heath was on the verge of fainting from blood loss, and neither had the energy to talk much. Tamri used the last of her strength to fetch water and replace the bandages on Heath’s wounds, then they collapsed onto her cot and slept until the following morning.

Tamri awoke to sunlight streaming through the window. She rose on her elbows, blinking in the glare. Heath slept peacefully beside her, a sunbeam glinting off his bronze hair and turning his eyelashes gold. Tamri’s heart swelled at the sight. She had missed him so much. She couldn’t believe he was here.

Heath shifted in his sleep, rolling onto his side and flinging on arm over her waist. Tamri’s breath caught. His arm was heavy and warm, and the weight of it trapping her in place felt very good. She didn’t want to go anywhere, anyway.

Tamri had never shared a bed with Heath before. They’d camped near each other in bedrolls during their travels, and he’d slept in her room that murky night after Gramma Teall’s death. But it was different to have his arm wrapped around her, his steady heartbeat pulsing against her skin, his leather-and-dragon-musk scent on her pillows.

Heath mumbled something and held her a little tighter. She combed her fingers through his hair, hesitant at first. She loved him, she realized with stunning clarity. She loved him so much that her head spun—though that could be his arm cutting off her circulation.

He gave a sleepy sigh. “You’re awake?”

“Yes. How are you feeling?”

“Better.” He nuzzled his face into her shoulder, still not opening his eyes. “I have a lot to tell you.”

She pushed a lock of hair back from his forehead. “We should eat breakfast and—”

“Little Bird.”

Tamri jumped. Queen had appeared at the window. She stuck her enormous snout through the opening and glared down at Tamri and Heath and their tangle of blankets.

“We will have a lesson.”

“Now?” Tamri asked incredulously as Heath sat up, reaching reflexively for a blanket to cover his bare chest.

“Yes.” Queen huffed a hot, fishy breath into the house. “This lump of a human will not interrupt our progress. Come. We will work on the mountain today.”

Heath blinked at Queen, looking concerned that he might be dreaming—or that he might not be dreaming. “She’s huge,” he said blearily.

Queen bared her teeth at him, showing off a jagged array of Lightning, then pulled her head back out of the window. “Meet me outside the village, Little Bird. Do not make me wait.”

Tamri threw off her blankets and got to her feet, smoothing out her rumpled tunic. It seemed Queen didn’t want Heath to occupy her attention—attention Queen clearly believed belonged only to her. This could be a problem.

“I need to go deal with her,” she told Heath, shoving her feet into her boots.
